There’s an extra dimension – Microsoft Office – which, because it uses the same rendering engine, could be exploited by an embedded ActiveX control on a boobytrapped webpage marked “safe for initialisation”.

A number of security flaws affecting IE originated not in the browser itself, but ActiveX -based add-ons used by it.

In 1996, CCC members demonstrated an attack against Microsoft 's ActiveX technology, changing personal data in a Quicken database.

In particular, all issues related to signed applets also apply to Microsoft ActiveX components.

This feature was abused by computer viruses that employed malicious scripts, Java applets, or ActiveX controls in folder template files as their infection vector.

This has led to the ActiveX-based architecture being criticized for being fault-prone.
