The Alans are an Iranian speaking people (see also Sarmatians and Ossetians ) who were early adopters of Christianity and migrated both east and west from their homeland.

The Alans however seem to have had a significant influence on Gothic culture, who became excellent horsemen and adopted the Alanic animal style art.

The region was conquered by the Ostrogoths in 455, and further exchanged hands between the Alans and Huns in the years to follow.
