This action short of a strike by the ASLEF union is currently the last scheduled rail industrial action but the dispute between ASLEF and the rail operating companies still continues with more strikes likely unless progress on a deal is made.

ASLEF and RMT members employed in the role of train drivers will strike on Wednesday 1 and Friday 3 February bringing all Northern services across the region to a halt.

Aslef hoped the new walkouts would "ratchet up the pressure" on train companies and the government to give train drivers their first pay rise in more than four years.

ASLEF union members across 15 train companies are striking.

Aslef – which represents 96 per cent of train drivers in England, Scotland and Wales – announced that workers with 15 companies, including Chiltern Railway, CrossCountry and Great Western Railway (GWR), had voted to take industrial action.

Drivers, who are the members of Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF), are engaged in a prolonged dispute with operating companies regarding pay and working conditions.

Industrial action by ASLEF and the RMT unions will bring fresh disruption to the region’s train services on three days next week.

London Underground workers in the RMT and Aslef unions are set to strike for 24 hours across the Tube network on Wednesday of next week.

Members of the RMT trade union plan to take strike at a number of train operating companies across the UK on Friday, while ASLEF – which represents train drivers –are expected to take strike action the following day.

Mick Whelan, Aslef’s general secretary, said: "Once again, we find ourselves with no alternative but to take this action.

Mr Whelan said that because inflation had "gone through the roof" since Aslef first sought an offer, what was acceptable six months ago "may not be acceptable to our members now".

No services will serve Southampton Central as train drivers from the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen union (ASLEF) walk out.

On both days of ASLEF strike action, in the event of disruption, services may be subject to short notice delays and cancellations.

Steve Montgomery, of the Rail Delivery Group, told the committee that talks were “further behind” with Aslef than with the other unions, but added that more talks will be held on Thursday in a bid to reach an agreement.

Striking NEU, UCU, PCS and Aslef union members were joined by RMT, Unison, CWU union activists as well as students, climate activists, midwives and other trade unionists.

The general secretaries of both Aslef, which has called strike action for Thursday, and the RMT said there was still a wide gulf between members and employers, as well as with the government.

The industrial action is the result of a ban on overtime by train drivers' union ASLEF coupled with planned engineering works by Network Rail.

There will no services on West Midlands Railway routes on these days due to the strike action planned by The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) union.
