In late 2022, four out of five emperor penguin colonies located in Antarctica’s Bellingshausen Sea region experienced total breeding failure due to sea ice loss.

This complex mixture of different types of Antarctic sea ice was photographed on Oct. 13, 2012, in the Bellingshausen Sea with the Digital Mapping System (DMS) onboard NASA's DC-8 flying laboratory.

Two centuries ago, the first Russian Antarctic expedition led by Bellingshausen and Lazarev discovered several islands in the Southern Ocean.

As of early 2012, sixteen positioning ground stations are under construction in Russia and in the Antarctic at the Bellingshausen and Novolazarevskaya bases.

First sighting Admiral Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was one of the first to spot the continent of Antarctica.

Some sources connect the name Vostok 1 to Bellingshausen's ship.

The northern three islands were discovered by Bellingshausen in 1819.
