While NASA’s Osiris-Rex mission is en route to Bennu to take samples, experts have calculated the time and payload it would take to move or destroy asteroid Bennu, that is been monitored since its discovery in 1999.

Bennu has spent seven years in space.

Bennu is a carbonaceous asteroid — a class of asteroids that contain a high amount of carbon.

But for those of us living now, Bennu can continue to be a source of wonder – rather than an existential threat.

Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May played a vital role in the OSIRIS-REx mission that successfully returned a sample of asteroid Bennu.

Once the sample has been documented and stored at the Johnson Space Centre, portions of Bennu’s rocks and dust will be distributed to scientists, other national space agencies and researchers around the world.

Osiris-Rex extended a vacuum tube to grab a material sample from Bennu in 2020, punching into the asteroid’s soft surface without actually landing on the space body, which is a loose amalgam of rocks, dust and debris held together by gravitational force.

Scientists estimate the capsule holds at least a cup of rubble from a carbon-rich asteroid known as Bennu, but they won’t know for sure until the container is opened.

The OSIRIS-REx mission launched in September 2016 and reached asteroid Bennu in December 2018.

This means Bennu can give us an unspoiled glimpse into the past.

However, the phosphate found at Bennu is of a higher purity and has a different grain size.

According to Nasa, the pinnacle of the operation came as the ancient but well-preserved asteroid, known as Bennu, was more than 321 million kilometres from our planet.

Another study has contended that the ejections could be the result of small meteoroids smacking into Bennu.

Asteroid Bennu is among the millions of asteroids found in our solar system.

For instance, scientists are interested in studying Bennu because it hasn’t undergone drastic changes since its formation over billions of years ago and therefore it contains chemicals and rocks dating back to the birth of the solar system.

He added that it is almost certain that the water on Earth was brought by asteroids like Bennu, building a connection between human life and the asteroids.

If the operation worked as intended, when the air-filter-like sampling head touched the surface, an elbow joint in the robotic arms bent to stay in contact with Bennu’s surface for about five seconds without actually landing.
