Last fall, total boardings across the transit system worked out to be 87 per cent of those seen in fall 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic caused a major downturn in transit usage.

However, the report said there is a lack of data in some areas, such as where specifically passengers get on and off, how ridership varies throughout the day, or the number of boardings and exits at each stop.

Passengers using a METRO Q Fare Card will pay $1.25 for the initial boarding and can make unlimited boardings in any direction within a three-hour time period.

Along with Metrolink riders on parallel Amtrak lines, these lines generate approximately 15,000 boardings per weekday.

Another 4,400 boardings (0.38%) occurred on subsidized bus routes operated by private carriers.
