South Yorkshire Police DCI Andrea Bowell speaks to the media after a 13-year-old boy admitted causing the death by dangerous driving of grandmother Marcia Grant by running her over with her car.

A competent, hardworking administrator, Bowell remained in Cabinet as Minister of Trade and Commerce, a newly made portfolio, after he became a Senator that same year.

Bowell thus became the second of just two Canadian Prime Ministers (after John Abbott ) to hold that office while serving in the Senate rather than the House of Commons.

Later life Bowell stayed in the Senate, serving as his party's leader there until 1906, and afterward as a plain Senator until his death.

The main-belt asteroid 2587 Gardner discovered by Edward L. G. Bowell at Anderson Mesa Station in 1980 is named after Martin Gardner.
