Beth Bowlen Wallace issued a statement Wednesday in which she said that her late father, Pat Bowlen, “would never have accepted the team’s current state” and hinted that a possible sale of the team to new ownership would be the best path moving forward.

There’s the debate over succession of controlling ownership of the team and the Bowlen Trust, of which Ellis is one of three trustees, has been unaccountably partisan against one Bowlen heir and in favor of another.

Though Bill Bowlen’s lawsuit was dismissed because Pat Bowlen died, meaning the executives no longer had power of attorney over his affairs, the judge who first oversaw the case expressed reservations about the many roles played by the executives.

In the other corner, we have Beth Bowlen Wallace, Bowlen’s second-eldest daughter from his previous marriage to Sally Parker.

Patrick Bowlen III has not obtained the necessary level of education to qualify, and John Bowlen Jr. – once considered the heir apparent – has been disqualified due to a pair of arrests in 2015 and 2017.

Brittany Bowlen returned to a role with the organization last year.

It includes no oversight on their activities or decisions, no criteria for future ownership of the team, and no criteria or specifics on succession within the family, which includes Bowlen's seven children.

Perhaps more realistic: Denver native and self-made billionaire Robert F. Smith is a man with the financial wherewithal and business acumen to do the Bowlen legacy proud.

Pat Bowlen had served as the Broncos’ principal owner from 1984 to 2014, when, as he battled the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, he surrendered control of the team to a trust led by the executives.
