But it was Mr. Erickson and Mr. O’Neill — referred to in the indictment of Ms. Butina as U.S. Persons 1 and 2 — whom she relied on most.

During their time together, Mr. Erickson and Ms. Butina began an intimate relationship, and he once referred to her as “Miss Moscow” in an email.

Mr. Torshin would often bring a bouquet of white lilies to their morning meetings, and he liked to tell people that Ms. Butina shared a birthday with Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47 rifle.

Ms. Butina’s agenda, though, is now in question.

Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson, who also met Butina at the airport, said the 30-year-old is a victim of entrenched anti-Russian attitudes.

The charges against Butina were brought by federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., and her case is unrelated to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called Butina’s sentence a disgrace of the US judicial system and accused the US court of carrying out a political order.
