Bytes

A chunk consists of four parts: length (4 bytes), chunk type/name (4 bytes), chunk data (length bytes) and CRC (cyclic redundancy code/checksum; 4 bytes).

In such PROMs, the DEL and NUL characters can be used in the same way that they were used on punched tape: one to reserve meaningless fill bytes that can be written later, and the other to convert written bytes to meaningless fill bytes.

Multiplied by 512 bytes per sector, this totals main bytes which, divided by main bytes per megabyte, equals 504 megabytes.

Since most communication and storage protocols are defined for bytes, and each unit thus takes two 8-bit bytes, the order of the bytes may depend on the endianness (byte order) of the computer architecture.

So while the MSS value is typically expressed in two bytes, the length of the field will be 4 bytes (+2 bytes of kind and length).

The MixColumns function takes four bytes as input and outputs four bytes, where each input byte affects all four output bytes.

The System/360 machine-code instructions are 2 bytes long (no memory operands), 4 bytes long (one operand), or 6 bytes long (two operands).

Each sub-block has a maximum length 255 bytes and is prefixed with a byte indicating the number of data bytes in the sub-block.

Flash EPROMs are electrically erased and programmed but only as groups of bytes, ranging from tens to tens of thousands of bytes for different devices.

For example, consider a Transport layer segment with size of 4,500 bytes, no options, and IP header size of 20 bytes.

If the sector is read successfully, some BIOSes will also check for the boot sector signature 0x55 0xAA in the last two bytes of the sector (which is 512 bytes long), before accepting a boot sector and considering the device bootable.

Instruction set Instructions are all 1 to 3 bytes long, consisting of an initial opcode byte, followed by up to 2 bytes of operands.

Sector sizes were set as powers of two (most common 512 bytes or 4096 bytes) for convenience in processing.

Some markers consist of just those two bytes; others are followed by two bytes (high then low) indicating the length of marker-specific payload data that follows.

Such bias can be detected by observing only 256 bytes. citation Souradyuti Paul and Bart Preneel of COSIC showed that the first and the second bytes of the RC4 were also biased.

Such prefixes are only used with the units bits or bytes (or compound units derived from them such as bytes/second) and always denote powers of 1024; that is, they are always used as binary prefixes.

The code values shown are packed into bytes which are then packed into blocks of up to 255 bytes.
