Caballus

During the plantation era, Diego Garcia was home to large herds of Sicilian donkeys ( Equus asinus ), dozens of horses ( Equus caballus ), hundreds of dogs ( Canis familiaris ) and house cats ( Felis catus ).

Pony breeds main Ponies are usually classified as members of Equus caballus that mature at less than 14.2 hands.

Przewalski's horse is one of three known subspecies of Equus ferus, the others being the domesticated horse Equus ferus caballus, and the extinct tarpan Equus ferus ferus.

Therefore, the domestic horse today is classified as Equus ferus caballus.
