Capelin

In October, a team of MIT and Norwegian oceanographers reported observations of a massive swarm of cod overtaking an equally massive swarm of capelin, off the coast of Norway during the height of spawning season for capelin.

This one event is unlikely to weaken the capelin population as a whole; the preyed-upon shoal represents 0.1% of the capelin that spawn in the region.

While the capelin benefited from the reduced fishing, the temperature rise in the 1980s and competition for food with the herring resulted in a near disappearance of young capelin from the Norwegian Sea.

It also was well known by fishermen that shortly after the capelin came inshore, so would the cod shortly after.

North Fish USA Inc. of Hallandale, Florida is recalling the imported 9-ounce packages of "Cold Smoked Capelin.

Fishing Honningsvåg is the most northerly fishing village in Norway The Barents Sea contains the world largest remaining cod population, citation as well as an important stocks of haddock and capelin.

This recovery was accompanied by a decline of capelin and cod stocks.
