Caravanserais

Both Zahir and Jazzar undertook ambitious architectural projects in the city, building several caravanserais, mosques, public baths and other structures.

Lonely Planet: Egypt (11th edition), p. 81. The famous Khan al-Khalili (see below) is a commercial hub which also integrated caravanserais (also known as khans).

The city had a double set of walls, 10 caravanserais and 4 madrassahs during this time.

They are told and retold endlessly in the teahouses and caravanserais of Asia and can be heard in homes and on the radio.

Umar bin Abdul-Aziz developed it further by building caravanserais at stages along the Khurasan highway.
