Cavernosa

With regard to the Y-shape of the cavernosa – crown, body, and legs – the body accounts for much more of the structure in men, and the legs are stubbier; typically, the cavernosa are longer and thicker in males than in females.

During an erection, blood vessels in the penis allow the corpora cavernosa to expand due to increased blood flow.

The corpora cavernosa is developed only slightly and the erection causes mainly an extension of this curvature and thus an extension, but not a thickening, of the penis.

The male corpora cavernosa taper off internally on reaching the spongiosum head.

These corpora are separated incompletely from each other in the midline by a fibrous pectiniform septum – a comblike band of connective tissue extending between the corpora cavernosa.
