Schmitt was part of the last crewed mission to the Moon, Apollo 17, and along with commander Eugene Cernan, one of the last two men to set foot on the lunar surface, in December 1972.

Three days later it entered lunar orbit and the lunar landing vehicle, manned by Stafford and Cernan, separated from the Apollo Command and Service Module and descended into a lunar orbit at an altitude of 47,000 feet above the moon.

Cernan and Schmitt taped the extension back in place, but due to the dusty surfaces, the tape did not adhere and the extension was lost after about one hour of driving, causing the astronauts to be covered with dust.

Cernan attempted but failed to test an Air Force Astronaut Maneuvering Unit which included a self-contained oxygen system.

Cernan, Evans and Schmitt returned to Earth on December 19 after a 12-day mission.

Cernan has said he observed the horizon spinning eight times over, indicating eight rolls of the spacecraft under ascent engine power.

In attendance were Armstrong's Apollo 11 crewmates, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin; Eugene A. Cernan, the Apollo 17 mission commander and last man to walk on the Moon; and former Senator and astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth.

The rovers were designed with a top speed of about convert, although Eugene Cernan recorded a maximum speed of convert, giving him the (unofficial) lunar land-speed record.

While working near the rover, a fender was accidentally broken off when Gene Cernan brushed up against it, his hammer getting caught under the right-rear fender, breaking off the rear extension.
