Cinemascope

Immersed in the ‘90s, paints a wild, wild world in cinemascope where a high stakes deal unfolds.

After the downfall of 3D films, Harry Warner decided to use CinemaScope in future Warner Bros. films.

But it was The Criterion Collection that later re-issued Forbidden Planet in CinemaScope's original wider screen 2.55-to-1 aspect ratio, on a deluxe laser disc set, with various extra features on a second disc.

CinemaScope became the first marketable usage of an anamorphic widescreen process and became the basis for a host of "formats," usually suffixed with -scope, that were otherwise identical in specification, although sometimes inferior in optical quality.

However Todd-AO has six channels instead of the four of Cinemascope and due to the wider stripes and faster film speed provides superior audio quality.

On the 2004 DVD commentary, Stanley Donen states that the film was originally shot in two versions, one in CinemaScope and another in normal ratio, because MGM was concerned that not all theaters had the capability to screen it.

The film flopped at the box office and has since been described as "the first flop in CinemaScope".

These perfs are commonly referred to as CinemaScope (CS) or "Fox hole" perfs.

They also introduced the first of three packed-house screenings that showed an MGM 35mm fine grain vault print in original CinemaScope and stereophonic sound.
