All but one of the current areas of exploration are in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, in the Equatorial North Pacific Ocean south and southeast of Hawaii.

Although not an integral part of its territory, Clipperton Island was administered from French Polynesia until 2007.

A small volcanic outcrop rising to convert on its south-east side is referred to as "Clipperton Rock".

Clipperton has had no permanent inhabitants since 1945.

Land elevations average convert, though Clipperton Rock, a barren convert volcanic outcrop in the south-east, is considerably higher and is the highest point.
