It’s a small shame, therefore, that the film’s ending hinged on one of the most bizarre plot contrivances in recent years.

But as in McBride’s previous works, you barely notice such relatively minor contrivances because of the depth of characterizations and the pitch-perfect dialogue of his Black and Jewish characters.

It’s a lot and it moves quickly, giving us monologuing villains and contrivances that feel out of place for the season.

They do, but not without forcing the viewer through a set of torturous plot contrivances.
