Layer 2 – Datagrams The datagrams are called frames.

When one network wants to transmit datagrams to a network with a smaller MTU, it may fragment its datagrams.

All hosts are required to be able to reassemble datagrams of size up to 576 bytes, but most modern hosts handle much larger packets.

In IP multicast the implementation of the multicast concept occurs at the IP routing level, where routers create optimal distribution paths for datagrams sent to a multicast destination address.

Initial extensions were also suggested (EDNS0), such as increasing the DNS message size in UDP datagrams.

Instead, OSPF forms IP datagrams directly, packaging them using protocol number 89 for the IP Protocol field.

IP datagrams may become fragmented and it is necessary for a NAT to reassemble these fragments to allow correct recalculation of higher-level checksums and correct tracking of which packets belong to which connection.
