AIB has apologised after it accidentally cancelled the direct debits of some of its tracker mortgage customers that were transferred from Ulster Bank.

Ofgem said in a statement: "Earlier this year, we strengthened rules regarding direct debits, which should prevent excessive accumulation of consumer credit balances.

Barclays asked applicants to download the bank’s app on their phone and sign up to its Blue Rewards programme at £5 a month, as well as transfer a number of direct debits.

Customers must use the ‘Current Account Switch Service’ to transfer their active credits and debits from a bank account held with another bank to one of its qualifying Club Lloyds accounts.

In total these debits amounted to £1.3m and were taken from the accounts of 18 branches run by claimants in the Bates v Post Office case.

Mrs Helen Agodo, a customer with First Bank Plc, said that daily debits from her account by her bank was becoming unbearable.

MSE explained: "Are you in too much ENERGY CREDIT (more than 2mths' Direct Debits' worth at the moment)?

The new deal is available to those switching to the M Account, M Plus Account or Club M Account by May 31 and who transfer two direct debits by June 26.

There will be no price increase to direct debits at this time, the trust has confirmed.

To minimize detection and reduce bank scrutiny, the scheme also involved "micro debits" from other controlled bank accounts, which kept the shell companies' return rates artificially low.

To qualify for the £175 payment, customers must switch at least two active direct debits using the Current Account Switch Service, close their non-Nationwide account, and complete the switch within 28 days.

While there is no immediate minimum deposit requirement, £1,000 must be deposited within 31 days of initiating the switch, and two direct debits must also be transferred.

You also have to pay £800 into your nominated account and payout at least four direct debits from the same account to qualify.

Currently, those who pay in £750 a month, pay out two direct debits and stay in credit receive a £2 monthly reward.

However, if you still have any unauthorised debits from your account, contact your bank immediately.
