Risks increase for acute respiratory infections such as influenza and coronavirus, along with the possibility of contact-transmitted diseases such as scabies, lice, fungi and diarrhoeal diseases, it added.

Pate stressed that there has been significant progress in tackling infectious diseases, with a 40 percent reduction in diarrhoeal diseases, a 24 percent reduction in tuberculosis (TB), and a 12 percent reduction in HIV.

These deaths are often a consequence of diarrhoeal diseases or lower respiratory infections.
