Luckily, he's come back with a vengeance, winning the Razzies' comeback award for Dolemite Is My Name.

Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox most recently produced “Dolemite Is My Name” for Netflix and Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Moore’s path to wider fame started when he heard lewd stories about someone called “Dolemite”, told by a local man named Rico.

Taron Egerton, a regular presence on the awards circuit this year, won best actor in a comedy or musical for his Elton John in “Rocketman” — an honor many had pegged for Eddie Murphy (“Dolemite Is My Name”).

The 58-year-old comedy icon has been enjoying a brighter spotlight in recent months thanks to his portrayal of Rudy Ray Moore, the struggling comedian who fashioned an alter ego for himself as the cartoonishly obscene pimp king known as Dolemite.

This would soon evolve, with Moore using the earnings from his records to finance a film based on the character of Dolemite.

And thus “Dolemite” is born, a low-budget production about a pimp/nightclub owner featuring the three key things Rudy wants to see in a movie: nudity, comedy and kung-fu.

For best musical or comedy, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, “Jojo Rabbit”, “Knives Out”, “Rocketman” and “Dolemite Is My Name” are in the race.

Moore also became popular for his creation of the character Dolemite in his stand-up routines that, after five years of performing as the urban hero, he decided to bring him to the big screen with the 1975 movie of the same name.

Moore chased success as a singer, dancer, and stand-up before finding it in his mid-forties (in the early '70s) in the persona of Dolemite, his pimp-styled character who delivered artfully filthy rhymes over a backbeat.

No less rude than Dolemite himself, whose resplendence in the film was in studied contrast with his ’ relatively subdued civilian wardrobes.

That time, apparently, is now as he's facing Oscar buzz for his work in the Netflix film "Dolemite Is My Name," based on the real-life blaxploitation star and comedian Rudy Ray Moore.
