Drejka in a sentence

McGlockton was shot by 47-year-old Michael Drejka in a Clearwater, Florida convenience store parking lot on 19 July after Drejka confronted McGlockton’s girlfriend, Britany Jacobs, over being parked in a handicapped space without a permit.

In 2018, Markeis McGlockton’s killer, Michael Drejka, remained free for almost a month.

An attorney representing Drejka, Theresa Jean-Pierre Coy, on Friday night said that she and her client respected the jury’s decision but suggested there may be “some appeal issues” that would be addressed later.

Drejka, of Florida, who told detectives he was irritated by people who illegally park in handicapped spots, was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in the fatal shooting of McGlockton, an unarmed black man.

Drejka pulled his vehicle in behind McGlockton’s and parked perpendicular to her, effectively blocking her in. He then confronted her and began looking for a handicapped placard, while Jacobs and two children were in the vehicle.

Drejka shooting McGlockton again was a case of a white person killing a black person.

Drejka will be sentenced in October and could get up to 30 years behind bars.

During Thursday’s testimony, Drejka’s account of the shooting shortly after it happened came in question.

He added that his office made that assessment after speaking with Mr. Drejka and reviewing the surveillance footage of the incident.

In video shown to the jury, Drejka told detectives that after McGlockton pushed him, he feared he was about to be further attacked and severely injured.

Drejka was ultimately charged and will make his first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon.

He claimed that the law, whether he agrees with it or not, puts a high burden of evidence on the state to show that Drejka was not able to use a “stand your ground” defense.

Nobody else would give me a word on that,” Drejka said.

The list includes the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in 2012 by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, and Michael Drejka’s fatal shooting of Markeis McGlockton in July in a convenience store parking lot.

They also says he poses a threat to the community and to himself, citing four previous incidents in which Drejka either brandished a gun at someone or became angry with them over perceived traffic sleights.
