Unfortunately, some of the highest-specification rigs have been cold-stacked for more than half a decade already and neither Transocean nor any of its competitors have ever tried to reactivate a drillship that has been sitting idle for so many years.

In fact, an advertisement by the Maritime Administration disclosed that the Stena Carron drillship has arrived at the Kaieteur Block with drilling activities expected to conclude in October.

Turkey reportedly bought the drillship for nearly $40 million (TL 295 million).

Additionally, it was noted that the Stena Carron drillship is currently drilling a second well at the Ranger discovery, while the Noble Bob Douglas and the Noble Tom Madden drillships are conducting drilling operations for the Liza Phase One development.

Another drillship is operating on the other side of the island, under a concession supposedly granted by the breakaway Turkish Cypriot republic that has occupied the northern half of the divided island since Turkey’s invasion in 1974.

A spokesman for Italian energy company ENI, which contracted the Saipem 12000 drillship, said the vessel would move on to Morocco.
