It is understood Thelin is keen on the Aberdeen position but is reluctant to leave Elfsborg without a boss so early in the Swedish Allsvenskan season.

Jimmy Thelin, manager of Elfsborg, dropped out of the running to remain in Sweden whilst Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill insists his focus is on the national team.

Meanwhile, Villa have made an approach for Iceland goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson from Swedish side Elfsborg.

New boss Ivan Juric has won seven points from a possible nine domestically since he took charge, but in Europe, it’s just one point from two games, with Roma suffering a shock defeat away to Swedish side Elfsborg.

The 23-year-old former Chemelil Sugar defender has started all four matches for Elfsborg since the new Allsvenskan season kicked off earlier this month.
