Nationwide, doubts raised about the diagnostic process in other childrens’ deaths have been linked to 34 exonerations since 1992, including 11 in the past five years, according to the National Registry of Exonerations.

There have been 30 exonerations so far.

Ms Bain later told MSPs that some of her comments had been “taken out of context” when it was put to her that she had previously opposed the principle of mass exonerations in Horizon cases.

The average length of wrongful incarceration is just over nine years, said the registry, which tracks exonerations going back to 1989.

Guilty pleas rather than trial verdicts obtain at least 95 percent of criminal convictions in the United States, but 80 percent of exonerations followed conviction at trial.

That certainly didn’t sound like a rousing endorsement of the young men’s exonerations that were based on a decided lack of proof that the NYPD and the local DA’s office still testified they had.

The insurers had issued more than a dozen specialty law enforcement liability policies between 1979 and 2010 (the year of the exonerations).

The database counts 29 exonerations in Florida since 1973.

Similar findings have been reached by numerous psychological and criminological studies, including findings from the National Research Council and supported by statistics from the National Registry of Exonerations.
