Exoplanet Watch invites volunteers to participate in exoplanet research, using their own telescopes to observe exoplanets or by analyzing data others have gathered.

The research group—in looking for a rocky exoplanet to simulate its hypotheses and consider the 15 different signatures—used data from the super Earth exoplanet LHS 3844b, which orbits a red dwarf a little more than 48 light-years away.

Their Physical Review Letters, suggests that hot-exoplanet atmospheres heated by their host stars at deeper depths lead to different persistent weather patterns.

The study is a follow-up to the team's initial observation of the star and exoplanets in 2019 using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite.

This may mean that there is a significant presence of methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the exoplanet’s atmosphere – which the team believes are absorbing the shorter wavelengths of light.

After the discovery of the first exoplanet 25 years ago, and since then thousands more, the question has become a serious one.
