Gurib-Fakim, the country’s first female head of state, on Wednesday denied having any plans to resign and said she was prepared to go to court over allegations she spent money from a charity on a shopping trip.

In a statement, PEI London said that Ms. Gurib-Fakim had refunded the money to its Mauritian sister organisation.

Mauritians increasingly saw Ameenah Gurib-Fakim as a “president in transit” because of her frequent trips abroad, a local journalist said.

Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, who has been implicated in a financial scandal, resigned on Saturday, her lawyer said, just days after she refused to stand down.
