The vessel's flyby of Ultima Thule -- about 1 billion miles past Pluto -- will be the farthest planetary flyby in human history.

Despite the problems with Brokkr-1, the company is pressing ahead with a second spacecraft that will perform a flyby of a near Earth asteroid and take high-resolution images of it.

Scientists, though, are interested in visiting the asteroid before the flyby to see if the close approach — closer to the Earth than the geostationary belt — alters the physical attributes of the asteroid in any way.

The double flyby also serves as a serendipitous preview of Asteroid Day on June 30 тАФ an occasion endorsed by the United Nations that is designed to raise awareness about asteroid impacts.

The immense set of data and images gathered during the flyby won’t become available to mission control until Parker has moved away from the sun in its orbit, which will occur about three weeks later in mid-January, Rawafi said.

This made them speculate that the moons are inert with no ongoing activity, but that assumption was literally smashed when they realized a solar wind event had impacted Uranus several days before Voyager 2’s flyby.

We have known that since the flyby, but now that higher-resolution images have been received, we can see that the surface of Arrokoth is quite smooth and has very few craters.

In a fitting tribute to the farthest flyby ever conducted by spacecraft, the Ultima Thule has been officially named Arrokoth (AR-uh-koth), a Native American term meaning “sky” in the Powhatan/Algonquian language.

While a close brush with an asteroid of any size can certainly be daunting, the upcoming flyby is nothing to worry about.

Its science collection began in earnest on the Aug. 27, 2016, flyby.

NASA is developing a flyby mission called Europa Clipper, which will study Europe through a series of close encounters through the atmosphere of the moon.

The flyby will be fast, at a speed of 9 miles (14 km) per second.
