Kenya and Tanzania depend on the lake’s freshwaters to support their fishing industries because the lake harvests more than one million tons of fish annually.

For example, over 20 species of stingray, most closely related to those found in the Pacific Ocean, can be found today in the freshwaters of the Amazon.

Walking catfish have also been introduced in the freshwaters of Florida, with the voracious catfish becoming a major alien pest there.
