Maybe it's a Gandalf w/staff "You Shall Not Pass" situation, but I don't know.

Most importantly though, Gandalf would not be able to walk properly if it wasn't for the staff that he also uses as a walking stick.

Solely focusing on that, Gandalf's look here might be a shred of light in this lackluster release.

Thankfully, the Extended Edition opens with a lengthy new sequence showing Gandalf and his companions arriving at Isengard to confront the traitorous wizard.

That left Gandalf as the only one faithful to his task, so much so that he sacrificed himself to defeat the Balrog.

That said, it shouldn't be overlooked that Gandalf's hair and beard here have more depth and shading to them than many of his other designs going for a more realistic look.
