Perodua’s local competitor Proton Holdings Bhd, with its foreign strategic partner China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd (Geely), announced its first SUV, the Boyue, which will debut in Malaysia this year.

But over the last months, Haval, Chery and Geely have made their presence clear.

This is surprising because in China, Harley partnered a Geely Motors subsidiary, Qianjiang, to make smaller bikes.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and Mercedes-Benz earlier this month established a joint venture in China to produce smart-branded electric vehicles.

The government said that internet giant Alibaba, carmaker Geely Auto, and China’s largest beverage producer Wahaha would be among them.

Volvo announced that it’s merging engine development into a new joint venture with parent Geely—so it can focus efforts on EV development.

Volvo, now owned by Chinese firm Geely, also said it was developing “smart speed controls” and geo-fencing technology that could detect when cars were being driven close to vulnerable sites such as schools and hospitals and so restrict speeds.

Zhejiang is considered the cradle of modern Chinese private enterprise, home to a generation of self-made billionaires from Alibaba’s Jack Ma and Geely founder Li Shufu to Wahaha’s Zong Qinghou.

And domestically, Volvo’s Chinese owner, Geely, did exceptionally well last year.

But then Lotus got bought by the bottomless pockets of Geely, and it started talking big.

China’s top domestic brand, according to the is Geely, which sold 1.25 million vehicles there last year, a 63 percent (!) increase from the year prior.
