Only about a third of fourth-graders and eighth-graders were “proficient” in reading in 2022, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the nation’s report card.

Also shifting to distance learning will be the district’s fourth-graders and fifth-graders.

About a third of fourth-graders are proficient in reading, while more than 40 percent of fourth-graders are proficient in math.

The eighth graders fell 36-17, and the seventh graders lost by a 49-17 margin.

Also noted: Private graders will be used, and their training would not be on par with USDA graders.

Fourth graders, however, skewed higher, and fifth graders higher yet, compared with their peers statewide.

In math, 53 percent of fourth graders were at or above proficient, as were 50 percent of eighth graders.

There will be three scrimmages during the Food Bowl — fourth through sixth graders, seventh through ninth graders, and the JV and varsity squads.

The team’s fifth graders will compete again next year when they’re in the sixth grade with a new group of fifth graders who are chosen based on teacher recommendations, ISTEP scores and teamwork skills.
