Former AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said on Wednesday that the new XBB.1.16 variant could be driving the recent rise.

Speaking to IANS, Guleria, who also led the national Covid task force, said that the H3N2 virus can lead to severe illness in the elderly, young children and people with comorbidities.

Earlier, an AIIMS team of two headed by Dr Guleria had visited Ahmedabad on May 9. On June 26, joint secretary at Union health ministry Lav Agarwal had visited Ahmedabad.

Guleria said that hospital preparedness with regard to management and infection prevention control facilities has been also reviewed.

Guleria who is incidentally a pulmonologist was reportedly accompanied on the visit by Dr Manish Sureja, from the AIIMS department of medicine.
