Echoing Huawei Business Group Chairman Richard Yu’s words, Gauden said while HarmonyOS could run on a phone, it’s not going to yet.

For instance, the company has already announced HarmonyOS -- an intriguing Android alternative.

However, Huawei has said multiple times that it doesn’t want to release a smartphone with HarmonyOS anytime soon.

Huawei has its own smartwatch operating system already, called LiteOS, and elements of it have been absorbed into HarmonyOS’ micro-kernel.

Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu revealed the new software on Friday, saying the company can deploy HarmonyOS "at any time" after the US blacklisting would force company’s devices to cut ties with Android.

Is Huawei really going to have to use HarmonyOS instead of Android?

It can use as the default operating system, but will miss on ’s core apps like Maps, YouTube, Search, etc. Another option in front of Huawei is to go with HarmonyOS, which is developed in-house.

The extent to which it can adapt the non-licensed version of Android or its new IoT operating system HarmonyOS to drive global smartphone sales in competition with Samsung and Apple remains to be seen.
