During the 1947 Kon Tiki expedition, when Thor Heyerdahl and his crew traversed the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia on a raft, two inexplicable submarine anomalies were observed.

Heyerdahl blamed their separation on his being away from home and differences in their ideas for bringing up children.

Heyerdahl subsequently made other voyages designed to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient people.
