Councilman Jose Huizar, who will be termed out in December, spent much of 2018 working to get his wife, Richelle Huizar, elected to his seat.

Before Huizar, there was his City Council colleague Mitch Englander, who represented a portion of the San Fernando Valley from 2011 to 2018.

Ex-Councilmember Jose Huizar, against whom Molina unsuccessfully ran in 2015, pleaded guilty to bribery in January.

That sordid tale seems right from the movies, with a Huizar aide allegedly picking up literal boxes of cash.

Court records show Huizar moved to the Tri-Cities soon after Rodriguez but was forced to go back to Yakima in May 2021 after the house he was renting was sold.

During the two-week trial, prosecutors portrayed Chan as a crucial intermediary between Huizar, who wielded huge power over downtown development projects, and Chinese real estate developers.

Huizar must also serve three years of supervised release following prison.

It has been represented by savvy political players, including former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and by Jose Huizar, who was sentenced to prison following his conviction in a sprawling bribery case.

The $1.8 million in bribes Huizar received was twice the amount that recently convicted New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez was charged with accepting.

At the time he allegedly provided those benefits, Huang was planning to redevelop the L.A. Grand Hotel into the tallest tower west of the Mississippi, which would require city approvals and Huizar’s help.

Broadway is “an ideal street to go car-free,” Huizar said, because narrower roadways and expanded space for pedestrians have already begun to transform the iconic corridor.

During that campaign, then-Council President Herb Wesson described Huizar as his best friend on the council.

Huizar, 51, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Huizar is charged with accepting over $800,000 in benefits from Huang.

Pressure to leave office can pale in comparison to the need to cover expenses for a family with four children, and Huizar has to know that earning money after a resignation would be difficult.

There is speculation that, given the guilty pleas, Huizar and his attorneys are already talking to federal investigators.

Earlier this year, Huizar took the leap and quit her day job to focus exclusively on the company, now a tight team of four with the addition of her sister-in-law Catherine Contreras.

For instance, two Los Angeles City Councilmembers made half-hearted attempts to introduce new renters’ laws in 2017: Gil Cedillo proposed “Just Cause” evictions and Jose Huizar introduced a proposal for no harassment for tenants.

With the support of the school, interested parents, and National Junior Honor Society members, Huizar’s tutoring program offered 45 minute tutoring lessons to children in first through sixth grade, four days a week.
