Imamoglu

After the February tragedy, the Istanbul municipality headed by Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a prominent figure in the opposition to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, earmarked for demolition 318 buildings housing over 10,000 people.

The CHP's poor performance in accompanying parliamentary elections have added to pressure for Kilicdaroglu to make way for a younger generation of leaders such as Imamoglu.

But Erman Bakirci from the Konda polling company insisted Imamoglu was "ahead" in Istanbul and suggested there could be "a gap between the (opinion) polls and the actual election results".

Ekrem Imamoglu—Istanbul’s mayor, often touted as a potential CHP presidential candidate—faces multiple court cases that could be used to bar him from running for president.

The party said on Twitter that Imamoglu was due to take office at 6pm.

Western media has already over Imamoglu, even though little information about him is known at this stage.
