If the House impeaches — and I’m guessing it will — 20 Senate Republicans would have to desert Trump to get a conviction.

If the House impeaches Trump, the Republican-controlled Senate will likely hold a trial, in which Trump must lose 20 of the 53 Republican senators to be removed from office.

It’s a “hold enough of your base to stop the Senate from convicting when the House impeaches” strategy.

Once the Bundestag or the Bundesrat impeaches the president, the Federal Constitutional Court decides whether the President is guilty as charged and, if this is the case, whether to remove him or her from office.

Where one house impeaches the president, the remaining house either investigates the charge or commissions another body or committee to do so.
