Interconnector

Enemalta has advised that a fault has developed on the Malta-Sicily interconnector, causing power cuts across several localities around Gozo and Malta.

The head of state took part in the opening ceremony of the Serbia-Bulgaria gas interconnector in the city of Nis, and also held meetings with the presidents of Bulgaria and Serbia Rumen Radev and Aleksandar Vucic.

These wires would carry on all the way to an interconnector in Lovedean, near South Downs National Park.

In turn, this state-owned corporation would invest, on behalf of Cyprus, the €100 million in the holding company that would manage the Great Sea Interconnector – the mooted subsea electricity link between Cyprus and Crete.

It lacks the glamour of the Channel Tunnel but the Celtic Interconnector is a significant piece of infrastructure in its own right.

The European Commission has provided in writing that it would “use all the diplomatic means at its disposal” to protect the Great Sea Interconnector after reports revealed the project was being monitored by the Turkish navy.

The GRTU estimates that the damaged interconnector has set business back "five years in terms of supply".

This includes the 3GW interconnection between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the 2GW Euro-Africa interconnector between Egypt and Europe via Cyprus, and a 164-kilometre link between Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The World Bank Group board of executive directors has approved $57 million (about K42 billion) towards the Malawi-Mozambique Regional Interconnector Project.

In addition to the above steps, Israel and Cyprus are considering implementing the proposed EuroAsia Interconnector project.

Such projects include the Interconnector Turkey-Greece-Italy (ITGI) and South Stream gas pipelines.
