Joshimath

As per experts, the cracks were developed because parts of the land had appeared to have sunk, triggering a crisis that resembles the situation in another Himalayan town, Joshimath in Uttrakhand.

Between April and November last year, Joshimath sank by 9 cm.

Chamoli District Magistrate (DM) Himanshu Khurana on Friday said various cracks had been noticed in 868 buildings of Joshimath.

Discussions are being held with the administrative officials at the Army base regarding the situation in Joshimath.

It asked the government to preserve the old Joshimath town and develop a new town to rehabilitate the residents.
