BOSTON (AP) — Defending champion Evans Chebet won the Boston Marathon again on Monday, surging to the front at Heartbreak Hill to spoil the much-anticipated debut of world record holder Eliud Kipchoge and win in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 54 seconds.

Chebet, 34, is now in the process of assembling his own Kipchoge-like streak, having won six of the last seven marathons he has entered.

Kelvin Kiptum has shattered the men's marathon world record held by fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, clocking two hours and 35 seconds (2:00:35) in the Chicago Marathon.

Kipchoge insisted the course was “no challenge at all,” because he had trained well for the hills.

Kipchoge kept up his pace and crossed the line well clear of other runners for a record fifth win.

Kipchoge’s Zen-like bravado — his slogan has become “no human is limited” — has turned him into a folk hero across the globe.

Tellingly, Kipchoge is dismayed when he hears how most people train for long runs.

The men's record is edging ever closer to breaking the two-hour barrier, with Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum setting a new record of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon last Sunday, shaving 34 seconds off the record held by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge.

The world governing body also ratified Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge’s 2:01:09 marathon world record.

Tigst Assefa broke the women’s world record by more than two minutes Sunday at the Berlin Marathon, as Eliud Kipchoge won the men’s race for the fifth time but couldn’t break his own record.

As Kipchoge wrote, Kiptum "had a whole life ahead of him to achieve incredible greatness".

Kelvin Kiptum and Kipchoge were anticipated to run together for the first time this summer at the Paris Olympics.

That came in Chicago last October, when he shattered Kipchoge’s mark with a time of 2:00.35 to cap off one of the most extraordinary years in marathon history.

The pre-race favourite on Sunday was Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele, with the five-time winner Eliud Kipchoge not competing.
