As the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches, Kyiv's forces near the Kupiansk area are remaining optimistic, despite enemy attempts to break through their lines.

Elsewhere in the Kharkiv region, three people were wounded in Russian shelling on the city of Kupiansk, Syniehubov said.

Grueling artillery battles have stepped up in recent weeks in the vicinity of Kupiansk, a strategic town on the eastern edge of Kharkiv province by the banks of the Oskil River.

In a statement, it said that intense fighting was concentrated near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, Avdiivka in the Dontesk region, and on the left bank of the Dnipro River.

Kharkiv governor Oleh Syniehubov said two men died today in shelling in Kupiansk, a city that Russia held before Ukrainian forces regained control of almost all of the province.

Kupiansk was captured by Russian forces in the earlier stages of the Russian invasion and reclaimed by Ukrainian forces in a surprise counteroffensive in September that saw the Russians driven out of broad swathes of the Kharkiv region.

On October 5, 2023, Russia attacked the village of Hroza near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, killing at least 51 people, including a child, and making it one of the deadliest attacks in Putin’s war on Ukraine.

To the north of Bakhmut, Russian troops advanced towards the town of Bilohorivka, just inside the Luhansk region, and shelled several settlements in the direction of Kupiansk and Lyman, the Ukrainian military said.

Governor orders mandatory evacuation from Kupiansk.

In the Kupiansk area, a house was set on fire by a Russian attack, wounding four women.

The governor of the northeastern region of Kharkiv said six people were wounded in the region following a morning attack, in the town of Kupiansk.
