A Transport Scotland spokesperson said: “We have been working tirelessly to find a long-term solution to the landslip risks at the A83 Rest and Be Thankful.

Dunrod Road has been susceptible to landslip and movement over a number of years, and remedial repairs have been carried out.

South Kintyre councillor Donald Kelly, who is behind two petitions calling for a permanent solution at the Rest and Be Thankful, is “sceptical” about medium-term solutions for the landslip-prone route.

The full closure will cause further disruption to motorists in the area, given the road is long in need of repair after being affected by a landslip in 2014.

The work at Kex Gill will include in addition to repair and resurfacing, ‘landslip work’, which identifies problems through regular inspections before they happen.

Last month the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and both Birmingham Moor Street and Oxford was closed due to a landslip near Bicester, Oxfordshire, causing major disruption.

Meanwhile, another landslip occurred between Yedukameri and Kadagaravalli section, also in the Mysuru division, on Friday night, affecting train services resulting in either re-routing or cancellation.

Network Rail central route director Denise Wetton said: “I’m really sorry to passengers affected by the landslip on the Chiltern main line near Bicester North station which has been caused by recent stormy weather and heavy rain.

Soil and other run off from the landslip caused the water to change colour, which then flowed from the Ithon into the Wye itself, affecting the colour of the catchment’s central waterway.

The line was closed on Friday afternoon thanks to an "obstruction on the track" at Telford Central, having opened fully this morning - three weeks to the day after a huge landslip near Oakengates.

There has also been work on Chideock Hill, which is part of a £2 million project after a landslip caused the road to become unsafe.

These projects have included landslip repairs in Lansdowne State Forest, repair of a damaged bridge on Causeway Road, Doyles River State Forest, and the Blue Mountain Creek Road bridge in Bulga State Forest.

This comes just over a week after a landslip was captured on video at Lulworth Cove along the Jurassic Coast.
