Last week the inquiry heard that Mr Letby called for the “instant dismissal” of the two consultants when he and his wife, together with Letby, met Mr Chambers at the hospital in December 2016.

Mr Chambers later described Mr Letby as 'pulling the strings' and feeling a 'sense of his presence' – even in meetings he had with Letby on her own.

After five weeks in hospital the couple's boy was discharged from hospital and Letby requested his mum as a friend on Facebook.

After Ms Letby was moved from her frontline role with the accusations hanging over her in 2016, she told detectives: "I wished sometimes that I was dead and someone would kill me".

Also speaking on GB News, Nick Gibb, an education minister, said Letby and all other convicted criminals should be in court for their sentencing.

A Manchester Crown Court jury that deliberated 22 days convicted Letby, 33, of murdering the seven babies over a yearlong period that saw her prey on the vulnerabilities of sick newborns and their anxious parents.

And if the inquiry provides even an iota of comfort to the bereaved families – and to those of Letby's other potential victims – then it will perhaps go some small way to help them live with this atrocity.

Cheshire Police has this week announced that it would be looking at the records of 4,000 babies admitted during her tenure as a nurse as part of Operation Hummingbird, the years-long probe that led to Letby's conviction.

DS Hughes said: “Ultimately, and the only person who can answer, in respect of why, Is Lucy Letby herself.

During the trial, however, the court heard that Letby felt "suffocated" by her parents and the attention they showed her.

Following last Friday's conviction, Letby has today (August 21) been sentenced to life in prison for murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more.

Following Letby's arrest and publication of her photograph, a year later, many more parents contacted police, which prompted officers to compile and send Dr Evans the medical notes of another 58 babies.

Following the conviction of Letby, the Countess of Chester Hospital is now facing increased scrutiny.

Following the sentencing of Lucy Letby, Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Evans said: “The sentence reflects the true scale and gravity of her horrific crimes and ensures that a calculated and dangerous individual is behind bars for a very long time.

In the Letby case, blood samples also revealed that two babies – Baby F and Baby L - had been deliberately poisoned with insulin.

It is unclear if Letby, who was sentenced to a whole-life term after a jury found her guilty of murder and attempted murder, will have to repay the legal aid.
