Controversial Israeli MK Yaakov Litzman, who is accused of aiding alleged child sexual abuser Malka Leifer, has informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he will step down as health minister.

Litzman, leader of the Jewish ultra-Orthodox party of United Torah Judaism, is in isolation with his wife who has been infected, reports Xinhua news agency.

Litzman publicly supported the decision, but some of his associates have said that was merely a threat designed to get the community to adhere to the guidelines to prevent the necessity of a closure.

Litzman, who heads an influential ultra-Orthodox faction in the government, expressed particular ire toward restrictions that will limit observant Jews from attending communal prayers at synagogues during the upcoming holidays.
