Minutewomen

After a strong first quarter, the Minutewomen returned to the field ready to find the net once again.

The 2023-24 Minutewomen haven’t shown who that player will be with only one game into the season, but they must find her soon before harder competition comes to play.

Three singles in the early stages of the inning gave the Minutewomen (7-15, 0-3 Atlantic 10) bases loaded with one out in the inning and a prime opportunity.

Van Herwijnen was the star of the show in net for the Minutewomen.

With one graduate student, three seniors and one junior, the Minutewomen supplemented the experience that was lost.

Finding ways to capitalize on prime scoring opportunities coming off set pieces will be a focus for the Minutewomen moving forward.

In the final three minutes, Greta Criqui scored the game winning goal, and Claire Mahoney made the game winning save as time expired on the Minutewomen.

Once again, a deflected ball off of a Minutewomen defender ended up right at the feet of Uribe, this time when she was already inside the goalie box.

The Minutewomen put the game away in the fifth inning with a three-run inning that pushed their lead to 8-3.

The next Minutewomen matchup will be on Tuesday Feb. 27 at home against Holy Cross at 3 p.m.

Wall got one save while she played in the third period, with senior Gianna Cameron finishing up the game in net for the Minutewomen.

For the Minutewomen, freshmen Lily Robinson and Sarah Conant both achieved personal bests in the 5000 and 3000-meter races, respectively.

Hosting has been a goal for each of the four Minutewomen teams that Leidel has played on, so achieving it in her final opportunity is a great feeling.

If the rest of the team can keep scoring at a high level, Philoxy and Mayo fit perfectly into a role as the grittier, glue players that the Minutewomen need.

Oddly enough, the Eagles edged the Minutewomen in nearly every notable area of the stat sheet––they led in draw controls 16-12, forced five turnovers to UMass’ four, and held their own in the ground ball game throughout the majority of the contest.

The Minutewomen play Boston College at Chestnut Hill this Saturday at 2 p.m.

Heeps and Lowery recorded their first points as Minutewomen.

Leidel’s play this season may determine just how far the Minutewomen can go after she showed some uncharacteristic inconsistencies and inefficiency last season.

One positive for the Minutewomen in this game was the play of Bonavita scoring the lone goal for UMass and had several other opportunities to score and potentially tie the game, or even take the lead.

The loss comes as a wake-up call for the Minutewomen, something that Verdi does not think is such a bad thing.
