Authorities in Haiti arrested a top official who served as general security coordinator when President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated, his attorney told The Associated Press on Monday.

Gangs control an estimated 60% of the capital of Port-au-Prince, and they have killed hundreds of people in recent months in their fight to control more territory in the aftermath of the July 2021 assassination of Moïse at his private home.

He had been named Moïse’s prime minister just days before the assassination, but had not yet been installed—and to some, his appointment was unconstitutional because he had not been elected.

Since Moïse’s assassination, the Caribbean nation has been led by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has not succeeded in overpowering the gangs that now control an estimated 60% of the capital.

Mr Henry, a neurosurgeon by profession, was named prime minister at the beginning of July 2021 by the then-president, Jovenel Moïse.

Officials pledged to find all those responsible for the pre-dawn raid on Moïse’s home early Wednesday in which the president was shot to death and his wife, Martine, critically wounded.

One of them involves former rebel leader Guy Philippe and ex-presidential candidate and senator Jean Charles Moïse, who told Radio Caraïbes on Wednesday that they signed a deal to form a three-person council to lead Haiti.
