Neonicotinoids from three major producers affect about 75% of all endangered species, the EPA recently found, and the UN cropland is now about 50 times more toxic than just a quarter of a century ago, contributing to an “insect apocalypse”.

He’s also concerned that birds might be eating seeds coated with neonicotinoids, a pesticide used to protect crops such as corn and soy from pests.

But the new study shows how the use of neonicotinoids has been contributing to that sharp decline.

Neonicotinoids have increased in popularity among farmers because they do not have to be reapplied once plants are growing.

The Trump administration has restrictions on neonicotinoids and for use last summer.

Those numbers might seem small, but they note that the effects of neonicotinoids become much larger over time, given that there are fewer birds available to mate and reproduce.

Neonicotinoids are seed treatments, they were created to reduce broad spectrum spraying, like the dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) that Nixon appointee William Ruckelshaus banned domestically over the findings of experts in 1972.

They confirm that imidacloprid residues remain in the environment, and spread, even turning up in rape nectar, even though neonicotinoids have not been applied to rape since 2013.

Bees also have been dying, with one cause believed to be pesticides, in particular pesticides containing neonicotinoids.

The decision by European Union member states to back the European Commission’s proposal on further restricting the use of neonicotinoids disappointed Syngenta, but it wasn’t unexpected.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also been exploring a concern that neonicotinoids may impact learning and memory in bees, which may impair their foraging success.

Whereas most people look at neonicotinoids and varroa mites as the main causes of the honeybees’ demise, it is clear to most that exploitive beekeeping practices contribute to the honeybee’s compromised immune system.
