The series finale for “Newhart,” in which the entire series was presented as a dream of Newhart’s character from the original “The Bob Newhart Show,” is considered one of the greatest TV finales of all time.

A short-lived TV series followed, and Newhart became a regular variety-show host and guest, as well as touring.

Jerry Digney, Newhart's publicist, said the actor died Thursday in after a series of short illnesses.
